CHAPTER 01 Undated, primordial

The Champion Who Betrayed the Titans

Sargeras began as the titans' champion against demonic threats but rejected the purpose he had sworn to defend. By assembling the Burning Legion, he turned the powers he once hunted into an army of conquest. That betrayal lay behind the ancient invasion through the Well of Eternity and the demonic menace that returned to Azeroth in later wars.

CHAPTER 02 Undated, primordial

Guardians of Azeroth

The titans brought order to an Azeroth already scarred by elemental powers and the Old Gods. Five dragon Aspects inherited the work of protecting the world through time, life, nature, magic, and earth. Their guardianship endured for ages, yet Neltharion's betrayal revealed how vulnerable even such powerful protectors could become.

Before the Kaldorei

Before the kaldorei dominated Kalimdor, troll peoples had built empires and fought terrible wars against the insectoid aqir. The Gurubashi and Amani traditions belong to a history extending far beyond the kingdoms that later fought over southern jungles and northern forests. Troll memory preserved rival stories about the origin of the night elves, including a theory that early elves descended from trolls altered by the Well.

The Empire That Doomed the World

The kaldorei built their civilization around the Well of Eternity, and its magic enabled an empire of extraordinary reach. Azshara's adviser Xavius became entangled with demonic power, and Legion armies poured into ancient Kalimdor. Survivors faced a transformed land, and Azshara's underwater court survived in the forms later encountered as naga.

The Betrayal of the Dragonflights

The dragon Aspects entered the War of the Ancients as defenders, believing their combined power might defeat the Burning Legion. Neltharion, formerly the Earth-Warder, became remembered as Deathwing, a being whose mastery of the earth now inspired terror rather than protection. The Dragonmaw held Alexstrasza in Grim Batol and compelled her brood to fight for the Horde; the Demon Soul eventually had to be broken to release her.

The Druid Who Stopped Sargeras

Malfurion Stormrage's apprenticeship to nature placed him at odds with the Highborne's reckless use of the Well of Eternity. Tyrande, other kaldorei resisters, and allies drawn into the ancient conflict helped challenge the Legion. When the Well collapsed, Kalimdor was torn apart and the Maelstrom formed.

CHAPTER 07 Immediately after Sundering → After Sundering

The Gift That Became His Sentence

Illidan Stormrage survived the Sundering with a vision of magic that his fellow night elves regarded as dangerously familiar. Illidan's decision therefore struck at the heart of the new society's effort to reject uncontrolled arcane practice. The guardians later planted Nordrassil above the new Well, and the dragonflights' blessings tied the great tree to night-elven longevity and the Emerald Dream.

CHAPTER 08 Following millennia

The Long Vigil

After the Sundering, the night elves turned away from imperial expansion toward a long guardianship of their remaining lands. The old kaldorei empire had used the Well of Eternity to build cities and sustain an elite class of arcane practitioners. Newcomers and enemies eventually reached the woods, and the Third War brought the Burning Legion back to Kalimdor.

Exile and the Founding of Quel'Thalas

The Highborne who refused to abandon arcane magic became exiles from the night-elven homeland. After the Sundering, night-elven leaders treated unrestricted arcane practice as an intolerable danger. Forest troll resistance became an enduring part of Quel'Thalas's history and helped shape later relations between elves and humans.

The Birth of the Human Kingdoms

The kingdom of Arathor joined formerly separate human tribes under Thoradin, creating a power that could challenge the forest trolls. The high elves appealed to Arathor when the Amani threatened Quel'Thalas, and human forces aided them in battle. The Council of Tirisfal arose from that concern, taking its name from the glades where its members assembled.

The unity once achieved under Arathor gradually gave way to distinct human kingdoms. Arathor's capital at Strom had once helped unite the human tribes and defend them during the Troll Wars. The Centaur and the Tauren

The centaur's origin was bound to the strange union of Zaetar, a keeper descended from Cenarius, and Princess Theradras. Cairne Bloodhoof's encounter with Thrall occurred against this background of persistent harassment.

The War of the Three Hammers

The death of High King Modimus Anvilmar left the dwarves' three great clans struggling over the inheritance of a shared kingdom. War divided the Bronzebeards of Ironforge, the Wildhammers of Grim Batol, and the Dark Irons led by Thaurissan and Modgud. Curses drove the Wildhammers east, while Thaurissan's summoning of Ragnaros devastated the land and enslaved his surviving followers. The fracture gave the dwarven peoples their separate homelands and rivalries for generations.

In the ruins of Gurubashi greatness, desperate troll leaders sought strength from Hakkar the Soulflayer. The Gurubashi had suffered from the Sundering and the long erosion of their ancient empire. Friendship Before the Horde

Durotan and Orgrim Doomhammer knew one another before the Horde's invasion brought their peoples into war with Azeroth. The Corruption of the Clans

The Horde's invasion was prepared by the destruction of the orcs' spiritual independence on Draenor. Gul'dan and the Shadow Council displaced shamanic customs with warlock power, while Mannoroth's blood bound warriors to the Burning Legion's designs. Some clans, especially Durotan's Frostwolves, resisted the transformation and paid for their dissent. The corruption turned divided clans into a conquering army whose legacy Thrall would later struggle to overcome.

The Frostwolves Refuse

The Frostwolf clan's refusal to accept the Horde's corruption placed Durotan in danger before and after the invasion of Azeroth. As the clans prepared for conquest, the offer of demonic strength divided those who sought victory at any cost from those who feared what the bargain would destroy. The son who later became Thrall inherited none of his parents' security, yet eventually recovered their story.

The Portal Between Worlds

The creation of the Dark Portal brought the orc clans of Draenor into direct war with Azeroth's human kingdoms. Gul'dan's schemes and Sargeras's influence over the Guardian Medivh converged to open the passage, placing Blackhand's Horde on Stormwind's doorstep. Early resistance could slow the invasion but not stop the danger flowing between worlds. Stormwind's eventual defeat drove its survivors north and helped give birth to the Alliance that would fight the Second War.

Medivh was born to the Guardian Aegwynn, inherited extraordinary power, and became the means by which the orcish Horde entered Azeroth. The Dragonqueen Enslaved

The Dragonmaw clan's captivity of Alexstrasza converted the power of the red dragonflight into a weapon for the Horde. CHAPTER 27 Second War

The Amani's Last Great Alliance

The Amani formed the great forest-troll power of northern ancient Kalimdor and later the northern Eastern Kingdoms. Their traditions centered on territory, warrior authority, and reverence for the loa, while their capital at Zul’Aman became a symbol of independence. Later accounts identify the defeat of Kith’ix as a formative ancient victory near that site. By the beginning of original WoW the Amani retained Zul’Aman but had lost much of their empire to the high elves and the human–elven Troll Wars.

The Tomb of Sargeras

Gul'dan's hunger for demonic secrets eventually proved more powerful than his allegiance to the Horde. During the Second War he led followers away from Orgrim Doomhammer's army in pursuit of the legendary tomb beneath the sea. The desertion weakened the Horde at a crucial moment, while the horrors inside the ruins killed the warlock himself. His end exposed the destructive ambition that had helped corrupt the orc clans in the first place.

The Liberation of Alexstrasza

The Dragonmaw clan's captivity of Alexstrasza gave the Horde control over a dragonflight devoted to protecting life. At Grim Batol, the Demon Soul enabled the exploitation of the Dragonqueen and her offspring long after the Second War's main campaigns had ended. Rhonin and his allies helped uncover and break that source of coercion. Alexstrasza's liberation ended a grave abuse of the dragonflights and weakened the legacy of Deathwing's ancient betrayal.

Deathknell: Awakening in the Forsaken

Deathknell received undead who had awakened free of the Lich King's direct control, uncertain of the world into which they had returned. Apothecary Johaan’s Unfinished Research

Apothecary Johaan's work in Tirisfal exposed the darker ambitions of Forsaken science during the first World of Warcraft era. The Forsaken had emerged from the Lich King's control but continued to live among hostile undead and former human enemies. The importance of Johaan's work lies in the direction it reveals within Forsaken society: experimentation shaped by the memory of plague, oppression, and the desire for power over an enemy that had once controlled them.

Executor Zygand directed Forsaken operations against the Scarlet Crusade in Tirisfal, where the struggle for Lordaeron's remains continued after the fall of the Scourge's first great offensives. The Scarlet Crusade emerged from the destruction of the human north with a fierce determination to eliminate undead threats. Remnants of Lordaeron — the Rise of the Scarlet Crusade

The Scarlet Crusade took shape among survivors and former defenders of Lordaeron after the Scourge destroyed the kingdom they had served. It is a bridge between the original dwarf origin mystery and the later reconstructed story of the troll empires.

Bloodhoof tauren regain territory in Mulgore

Cairne establishes Thunder Bluff as a refuge

For generations, the tauren of Kalimdor had moved under the pressure of centaur raids, often unable to protect every family or settlement. Tauren tribes unite under Cairne

Distinct tribes crossed Kalimdor with their own elders, traditions, and loyalties, united by reverence for the Earth Mother but divided by the need to survive. Fighting together against common enemies and eventually helping defend the world from the Burning Legion gave the tauren the chance to establish Mulgore as a homeland. Magatha Grimtotem disputed Cairne's direction and imagined a different future for their people.

The Great Hunt remains central to tauren rites

The Great Hunt remained a defining part of tauren life as the tribes settled in Mulgore. Young tauren proved their readiness through strength, patience, and respect for the living world. Thunder Bluff becomes a trade and cultural center

Cairne Bloodhoof had secured Mulgore after years of centaur harassment and called scattered tauren tribes toward the great mesas. The tauren's survival had depended on mobility, but their future now depended upon sustaining a common center without erasing the traditions of its people.

Magatha leads the Grimtotem warriors

The Grimtotem were among the tauren tribes drawn into Cairne Bloodhoof's political world, but their leader Magatha never shared his confidence in cooperation with outsiders. Magatha disputes Cairne’s leadership

The founding of Thunder Bluff did not settle every disagreement among the tauren. Magatha's ambitions drew strength from the Grimtotem tribe, whose members shared her hostility toward peoples she regarded as lesser or intrusive. Cairne's standing among the tribes gave him the authority to lead, but Magatha's presence ensured that unity would remain contested.

Camp Narache serves as the tauren starting area

Camp Narache rose on the edge of Red Cloud Mesa after the tauren began to gather in Mulgore under Cairne Bloodhoof's leadership. The Rite of Strength confronts the Bristleback

The Rite of Strength tested whether a young tauren could meet danger without abandoning the responsibilities of the tribe. Elders sent initiates against the Bristleback so that their courage could be measured through deeds. By preserving such rites after the move to Thunder Bluff, the tauren ensured that settlement did not weaken the habits that had carried them through generations of wandering.

The Spell-Weaver’s Charge

Neltharion, once the Earth-Warder and an ally of the other Aspects, persuaded his fellows to contribute their power to a single artifact. The blue dragons' long history became inseparable from that calamity, a warning that power gathered for protection can ruin its keepers when one guardian chooses dominion instead.

The Western Plaguelands Approach

The Western Plaguelands were once part of Lordaeron's settled heartland, tied to farms, roads, and the royal order that had held the northern human kingdoms together. The Argent Dawn placed its people on the approaches to the ruined kingdom, seeking to contain the undead and protect survivors without repeating the Scarlet Crusade's hostility toward outsiders. The Western Plaguelands approach thus became a frontier of endurance, where the Argent Dawn tried to keep the living from surrendering the last fragments of their former world.

Two Answers to the Scourge

The destruction of Lordaeron brought two different answers from those who wished to resist the Scourge. Scarlet commanders relied on militant discipline and a doctrine of purity, defending their strongholds from threats they often defined broadly. Neither could restore the dead cities or reverse the betrayal of Arthas.

Light's Hope became a promise that the kingdom's surviving people need not abandon every virtue for which they had once fought.
