Quick Overview

The Horde's search for stronger magic during the Second War led it to the elven runestone at Caer Darrow and to the Altars of Storms. The runestone's elven origins mattered because the Horde did not begin with unlimited knowledge of Azeroth's arcane defenses. The secure historical theme is the adaptation of stolen runestone magic and the resulting war magic.

Full History

The Horde's search for stronger magic during the Second War led it to the elven runestone at Caer Darrow and to the Altars of Storms. The Warcraft II manual links power drawn from the stone to the creation of ogre-magi. Cho'gall's name belongs to this world of sorcery and powerful ogre allies. The development shows how the invading army sought to adapt magical resources taken from the peoples it fought.

The runestone's elven origins mattered because the Horde did not begin with unlimited knowledge of Azeroth's arcane defenses. Its warlocks and allied spellcasters sought sources that could be turned to their own purposes. The Altars of Storms gave ritual form to such experiments, yielding ogres capable of casting devastating magic. These additions made the Horde more dangerous, but also demonstrated the degree to which its expansion depended on theft and manipulation of forces it had not created.

The original manual contains chronological tensions concerning Cho'gall and the first ogre-magi, so the source should not be silently forced into a sequence it does not consistently support. The secure historical theme is the adaptation of stolen runestone magic and the resulting war magic. An exact ordering of every named actor's contribution still requires editorial reconciliation against eligible texts.
