Frostmane trolls and troggs threatened dwarven settlements and routes around Dun Morogh and Loch Modan. Even the strength of Ironforge did not guarantee safety beyond its gates. Local defenders had to protect villages, roads, and mining communities while confronting enemies whose presence was rooted in the surrounding lands.
The Frostmane were a troll people distinct from the forest trolls who had fought Quel'Thalas. Their hostility to the dwarves formed part of the immediate dangers of the snowy mountain region. Trogg incursions, meanwhile, were associated with ruins and underground places where dwarven explorers and settlers sometimes disturbed threats they did not fully understand. These enemies required regular patrols and the help of capable fighters even in areas claimed by the Bronzebeards.
The situation is part of the original World of Warcraft starting state rather than a single war with a recorded final victor. It adds scale to Ironforge's history: while kings studied ancient relics and the Alliance remembered campaigns against the Horde, ordinary dwarves still needed protection close to home. Their security depended upon local vigilance as well as the mountain fortress.
