Quick Overview

Dun Morogh is the snowy heartland of the Bronzebeard dwarves and their great city of Ironforge. Its roads and excavations are shaped by the War of the Three Hammers, the search for ancient dwarven origins, and continued Frostmane troll and trogg hostility. Refugees from ruined Gnomeregan give the mountain kingdom a second, ongoing responsibility.

Full History

The mountains around Ironforge are more than the dwarven kingdom's natural defenses. Beneath the snow lies a history of division and discovery. The Bronzebeard dwarves hold Ironforge, the great mountain-city that survived the War of the Three Hammers; their relatives in the Wildhammer and Dark Iron clans followed different paths after that civil war. The surrounding passes connect the capital to Loch Modan and the long road toward the Wetlands, making every defended gate and tunnel part of a much larger history of dwarven trade, warfare, and reunions. Archaeologists from the Explorers' League search the mountains for evidence of their people's remote origins, though the origins should not be embellished with later-expansion revelations.

Dun Morogh's apparent quiet is deceptive. Kharanos, Gol'Bolar Quarry, and the frozen settlement of Coldridge Valley support the kingdom with food, minerals, and fresh defenders. The Frostmane ice trolls remain a distinct northern troll community whose hostility reaches into the approaches to Coldridge. Troggs, creatures unearthed by dwarven excavations, emerge from the deeper ground in worrying numbers. The contrast is striking: a people proud of their scholarship must constantly confront the dangerous things their excavations disturb. Old military strength helps Ironforge keep the roads open, but neither heavy gates nor the skill of mountain riflemen has ended those threats.

The gnomes give this mountain realm another sorrow. Their nearby city of Gnomeregan fell into disaster after trogg incursions and a catastrophic attempt to contain them with radiation. Survivors fled to their dwarven allies, while irradiated leper gnomes remained in the fallen complex. Ironforge's refuge for the displaced illustrates the durable friendship between the two peoples, and the approaches to Gnomeregan remind visitors that engineering genius can fail disastrously. Frostmane enclaves, troggs, and the unresolved Gnomeregan crisis crowd the borders of the great dwarven city.
