Full History
Anvilmar bears the name of the high king whose death brought the old dwarven unity to an end. Under King Modimus Anvilmar, the Bronzebeards, Wildhammers, and Dark Irons had shared Ironforge despite their differences. When he died without a successor who could hold their allegiance, competition for the mountain kingdom erupted into civil war.
Madoran Bronzebeard eventually defeated the rival clans and retained Ironforge. The Wildhammers founded a new capital at Grim Batol, while the Dark Irons established the city of Thaurissan in the south. The conflict gave the dwarves three separate political histories in place of their earlier common rule.
The name Anvilmar thus belongs to a memory of what existed before those divisions hardened. In Dun Morogh, among the settlements of the surviving Bronzebeard kingdom, it recalls a ruler whose era ended in a succession crisis that remade dwarf society. The later wars over Ironforge and Grim Batol were fought by descendants of clans that had once lived beneath one crown.
