Full History
The dwarves of Ironforge built the Thandol Span to maintain a reliable connection with their Wildhammer kin farther north. The bridge joined territories divided by old wars and the difficult geography between them. Its purpose was commercial as well as political: a safe route could preserve cooperation that the War of the Three Hammers had once destroyed.
After Anvilmar's death, the Bronzebeards and Wildhammers took separate paths. The Bronzebeards kept Ironforge, while the Wildhammers first went to Grim Batol and then established themselves in the Hinterlands after the Dark Iron attack. The two clans eventually restored trade and communication, but distance and terrain remained obstacles. Constructing a major span demonstrated an investment in those renewed ties rather than a mere promise of friendship.
The bridge later became part of the contested landscape of the Eastern Kingdoms, where armies and travelers crossed the same routes once built to link dwarf communities. In the original World of Warcraft setting it survives as a reminder that roads and engineering are also historical artifacts. The Thandol Span records the continuing relationship of clans that had become politically distinct.
