Full History

Ironforge is the mountain capital of the Bronzebeard dwarves, its immense halls carved into the heart of Dun Morogh. The city survived the War of the Three Hammers when the great dwarven clans fought over the legacy of their common kingdom. Madoran Bronzebeard and his successors kept control of Ironforge, while the Wildhammer dwarves eventually founded a new life in the Hinterlands and the Dark Iron clan established its power around Blackrock Mountain. This division defined dwarven politics for generations. Ironforge is therefore not simply the largest fortress in Khaz Modan; it is the surviving capital of one branch of a people divided by a destructive civil war.

King Magni Bronzebeard rules at the original game's opening. His kingdom remains an important member of the Alliance, connected with the human realms through older wartime ties and the shared struggle against threats in the Eastern Kingdoms. Its great forge, military district, libraries, and avenues are supported by mountain settlements in Dun Morogh and Loch Modan. The Explorers' League also reflects a growing dwarven interest in the buried history of their own race. That curiosity has led to the examination of Uldaman, ancient stone guardians, and relics of lost ages. The available sources permit fascination and open questions, but do not authorize importing later expansion revelations about every ancestor and titan machine.

Ironforge is also a refuge for the gnomes. Their technological city of Gnomeregan was lost during a trogg crisis and disastrous use of radiation; High Tinker Mekkatorque and survivors found shelter among their dwarven allies. The coexistence of gnomish engineering workshops and dwarven forges is evidence of a deep alliance, not a declaration that Gnomeregan's tragedy has been resolved. The city benefits from the newcomers' skills while sharing the burden of their displacement.

Although mighty doors and stout defenders protect Ironforge, the political world beyond the mountain remains unstable. Dark Iron intrigues, trogg incursions, and the dangers of the southern passes make the city's history part of the ongoing fight for Khaz Modan. It represents continuity, craftsmanship, and alliance, but also the cost of ancient clan rivalry and the responsibility of sheltering friends whose own homeland has fallen.
