Ironforge endured an orcish siege during the Second War even as Horde armies overwhelmed other positions in Khaz Modan. The fortress's survival kept a major dwarven stronghold beyond the enemy's control. It also offered a powerful base for the Alliance in a region threatened by the Horde's advance north.
The orcish invasion had already destroyed Stormwind and pushed the conflict into the lands of other peoples. Dwarven settlements, roads, and mountains became strategically important as both armies tried to move through the Eastern Kingdoms. Ironforge's defenses reflected generations of engineering and the advantage of a great citadel carved into the mountain. The Horde could threaten the surrounding region without easily breaking the fortress itself.
The siege showed why the Bronzebeards' ancient control of Ironforge mattered in a war far removed from the Three Hammers. Their capital remained a defensible center able to supply arms and technical help to the wider Alliance. At the original World of Warcraft starting state, Ironforge's survival was part of the long continuity of dwarven power, linking old clan wars to the struggle against the Horde.
