Quick Overview
Blackrock Mountain contains rival powers whose histories overlap without forming a single alliance. The Dark Iron dwarves inhabit its depths under Ragnaros's shadow, while Rend Blackhand's Dark Horde and Nefarian contend for its upper strongholds. The mountain unites the legacy of the dwarven civil war with the unfinished consequences of the Old Horde.
Full History
Blackrock Mountain rose from a catastrophe near the end of the War of the Three Hammers. The Dark Iron dwarves' sorcerer-thane, Thaurissan, attempted to call upon a power that would defeat his dwarven enemies, but instead summoned the Firelord Ragnaros into Azeroth. The eruption devastated the country around him and raised the volcanic stronghold that later armies would struggle to control. Yet the mountain's importance did not end with the dwarven catastrophe. During the wars between the Old Horde and the Alliance, the orcs seized its heights, and Warchief Orgrim Doomhammer's forces used Blackrock Spire as a center of their campaign. Near the end of the Second War, Orgrim slew Anduin Lothar in the struggle around Blackrock, but Turalyon rallied the Alliance rather than allowing that loss to end its resistance. Its corridors thus preserve several layers of conquest, none of which completely erased the others.
The mountain's lower reaches shelter the Dark Iron kingdom and Shadowforge City, dominated by Emperor Dagran Thaurissan and the immense power of Ragnaros beneath. Above them, Rend Blackhand's Dark Horde is based in Blackrock Spire. Rend claims a lineage and legitimacy at odds with Thrall's New Horde, while draconic influence complicates the struggle over the fortress. Nefarian's designs and the black dragonflight add a power interested in using the mountain for purposes very different from the dwarves' mining or the orcs' tribal rivalries. Ragnaros, Nefarian, the Dark Iron, and Rend's followers are connected by geography and conflict, not by a single unified allegiance.
Visitors approach from Searing Gorge or the Burning Steppes, crossing ruined masonry and chains over molten depths. Blackrock Depths and Blackrock Spire are already part of the original game's dungeon landscape; later raid openings, encounter phases, and expedition outcomes must be separately dated rather than imagined as completed facts at launch. The mountain is not one story but several stories struggling for control of the same volcanic fortress: a broken dwarf kingdom, the surviving Old Horde, dragonflight intrigue, and an elemental lord whose presence permanently changed Khaz Modan.
