Quick Overview
Blackrock Depths is the sprawling subterranean capital of the Dark Iron dwarves beneath Blackrock Mountain. Its history descends from the War of the Three Hammers and Thaurissan's disastrous summoning of Ragnaros. Emperor Dagran Thaurissan rules a city that lives in the shadow of elemental fire and hostile rival powers. The dungeon is a political kingdom and industrial metropolis, not merely a corridor to Molten Core.
Full History
The Dark Iron dwarves lost their bid for control of the dwarven kingdoms during the War of the Three Hammers. In the aftermath, Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan called upon terrifying magic and summoned Ragnaros into the world, a catastrophe that tore Blackrock Mountain open and transformed the surrounding lands. The Dark Irons became bound to the terrible power they had brought forth. Their city beneath the mountain survived, but as a fortress steeped in heat, bitterness and uneasy obedience.
Blackrock Depths still contains ordinary signs of an organized society: workshops, forges, assembly halls, a prison and royal chambers. Emperor Dagran Thaurissan presides over this place as ruler, while the influence of Ragnaros and the Firelord's servants constrains every political ambition. The Blackrock orcs and Nefarian's draconic forces elsewhere in the mountain represent different powers whose contests can threaten the Dark Iron heartland without erasing its independence.
Because the halls form a connected city, a history article should follow its rulers, its industry, and its elementally bound origin instead of reducing it to a list of enemy names.
There is also a dynastic crisis beneath these walls. Princess Moira Bronzebeard, daughter of Ironforge's Magni, is associated with Emperor Dagran Thaurissan in the original quest story. Magni's demand that she be recovered turns the enemy capital into the stage of a deeply personal dispute between royal houses. Whether adventurers accept the father's assumptions or discover uncomfortable truths, the scene cannot be flattened into simple dwarven heroism versus villainy. Moira's place at Shadowforge links the War of the Three Hammers to a present family conflict, and no later account of her accession or a Council of Three Hammers should be imported into the original frozen world.
