Quick Overview
After the death of High King Modimus Anvilmar, the Bronzebeard, Wildhammer, and Dark Iron dwarf clans fought for supremacy. The war scattered their peoples, brought ruin to Grim Batol, and ended with Thaurissan summoning Ragnaros. The reshaping of Blackrock Mountain left a wound in Khaz Modan that survived into the original World of Warcraft.
Full History
The dwarves of Khaz Modan once lived under the authority of High King Modimus Anvilmar, but the great clans disagreed over power, wealth, and the future of their kingdom. After his death, those divisions grew into open conflict. The Bronzebeards, Wildhammers, and Dark Irons became competing armies in the War of the Three Hammers, struggling to determine who would rule the ancient mountain realm and where its clans would make their homes.
The Bronzebeards retained Ironforge, while the Wildhammers withdrew to Grim Batol and the Dark Irons established power under Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan. Fighting did not end with this separation. Thaurissan and his wife Modgud continued the conflict against their rivals. Modgud's attack upon Grim Batol brought terrible sorcery into the city's defense, and her death left a curse upon the fortress that eventually drove the Wildhammers from their home.
Thaurissan's desperate attempt to reverse his defeat produced an even greater disaster. Through reckless summoning he called Ragnaros the Firelord into Azeroth. The catastrophe formed Blackrock Mountain and bound the Dark Iron dwarves to a power far older than their clan rivalries. A war over the leadership of dwarves had unleashed an elemental lord whose influence threatened the lands around him.
The conflict shaped the geography and allegiances encountered in the original game. Ironforge remained Bronzebeard territory, the Wildhammers eventually made a new home at Aerie Peak in the Hinterlands, and the Dark Irons held Shadowforge City within Blackrock Depths. The clans were not merely three branches of a distant family tree; they inherited opposing memories of exile, defeat, and sorcery. The War of the Three Hammers explains the surviving political division of dwarfkind and the presence of Ragnaros beneath Blackrock Mountain.
