Full History

Blackrock Mountain contained rival powers even after the Horde's defeats. The Dark Iron dwarves served under the shadow of Ragnaros, while Rend Blackhand's Dark Horde and Nefarian represented other claims to force and dominion. Their interests overlapped within the same volcanic stronghold. The mountain became a place where the consequences of ancient dwarven tragedy and recent orcish wars met without a settled victor.

Ragnaros's arrival had begun with Thaurissan's desperate summoning during the War of the Three Hammers, leaving the Dark Irons subjugated and the southern mountains transformed. The orcish presence grew from later invasions and the fragmentation of the old Horde after its defeat. Nefarian's designs added another dangerous figure to a region already contested. These factions had different origins, and their proximity did not make them one unified army.

The original World of Warcraft world depicts a struggle still in progress beneath Blackrock's stone. Dungeon and raid challenges are possibilities presented to adventurers, not historical victories already achieved. Blackrock Mountain's significance is precisely that multiple unresolved disasters persisted in one place. Ancient elemental bondage and the aftermath of the Second War continued to menace the living kingdoms.
