Full History
Nefarian, son of Deathwing, claimed Blackrock Mountain as the seat of his designs. In mortal guise he was known as Lord Victor Nefarius, but his true concern was the strength of the black dragonflight. Where his sister Onyxia preferred manipulation in human courts, Nefarian gathered creatures, experiments, and servants behind the fortress walls.
Blackrock Spire was already contested ground. Orc clans, the remnants of the Dark Iron kingdom, and the servants of Ragnaros struggled for influence throughout the mountain. Nefarian made use of these rivalries, particularly the power of the Blackrock orcs, while pursuing efforts to create a new and more formidable breed of dragon. The fortress became both a stronghold and a place where living creatures were subjected to the black flight's ambition.
The schemes in Blackrock Mountain grew out of an older betrayal. Deathwing had turned against the other dragonflights during the War of the Ancients, and his children continued to seek power over a world their father had failed to master. Nefarian's legacy at the opening of the new age was therefore not a new kingdom but a dangerous project hidden amid the ruins of older wars.
