Quick Overview
The black dragonflight was once entrusted with the world's earth and deep places under Neltharion. His corruption and betrayal as Deathwing turned that guardianship into a threat to the other dragonflights and mortal kingdoms. Even when Deathwing's whereabouts became uncertain, the black dragons remained dangerous.
Full History
Neltharion was counted among the five great dragon Aspects, tasked with tending the earth and the stability of the world. The black dragonflight served beneath him until the ancient war against the Burning Legion revealed a catastrophe within their own ranks. Under the name Deathwing, Neltharion turned the Dragon Soul against his fellow Aspects.
His attack shattered the trust among the dragonflights and brought devastation to those who had believed they stood together. It also ensured that black dragons would be feared not merely for their strength but for their willingness to manipulate or destroy those around them. The Dragon Soul remained a weapon whose later use would bind Alexstrasza and her children to the Dragonmaw clan.
Deathwing eventually disappeared from open view, and uncertain reports suggested he might be dead. Yet his flight endured. Black dragons remained among the world's hostile powers, while the consequences of the ancient betrayal continued to shape the fate of their kind.
