Full History
Before the world knew Deathwing, it knew Neltharion as the Earth-Warder. His charge among the five Dragon Aspects was the strength and stability of the deep places of Azeroth. The other flights trusted him as a guardian whose dominion over stone and earth made him indispensable to the world's protection.
That trust ended during the War of the Ancients. Neltharion persuaded his fellow Aspects to contribute their powers to an artifact he called the Dragon Soul. He claimed it would help them resist the Burning Legion. Once their gifts were bound within it, he turned the weapon against the dragons themselves, revealing his ambition to command rather than protect.
The destruction of the blue flight and the fear that spread among the others marked his transformation into Deathwing. His betrayal changed the struggle against the Legion and left the remaining Aspects weakened and suspicious. The Earth-Warder had been meant to preserve the foundations of the world; by using the authority of that office to seize power, he helped break the fellowship meant to guard it.
