Before he was feared as Deathwing, Neltharion belonged to the five great protectors of Azeroth. The ancient guardians knew him as the Earth-Warder, entrusted with the deep places and substance of the world. His eventual betrayal was devastating precisely because he had once stood beside them. The history of his fall begins with an obligation shared, not with a creature born to destroy.
The Aspects' charges gave them separate responsibilities while binding them to a common defense of Azeroth. During the Burning Legion's first invasion, Neltharion persuaded the others to empower an artifact intended to fight their enemies. That proposed weapon became the Dragon Soul. When its maker turned it against the dragonflights, their trust and military strength were shattered, and Neltharion's old title became inseparable from the monster remembered as Deathwing.
The story is not a license to explain his corruption using histories published long afterward. Original-era material establishes his status as an Aspect, the betrayal surrounding the Dragon Soul, and the terrible consequences for the others. It leaves some deeper ancient causes without the precise detail later works would claim. His transformation remains one of Azeroth's central warnings about guardianship abused from within.
