Quick Overview

Terror Wing Path cuts through the eastern Burning Steppes, where black drakes and dragonkin turn the road into a dangerous frontier. Their presence reflects the black dragonflight’s hold over the country surrounding Blackrock Mountain. Scouts from Morgan’s Vigil struggle to contain these creatures before they range farther toward the lands of Stormwind. The path is a reminder that the wars around the volcano are fought in the sky as well as among its fortresses.

Full History

Travelers entering the Burning Steppes from the south confront a landscape shaped by a disaster older than the present wars. Ragnaros’s emergence remade the northern Redridge Mountains, raising Blackrock Mountain and leaving ash and lava where ordinary valleys had once stood. Yet the volcano is not the only reason the road has become deadly. Farther east, the black dragonflight has established a presence that threatens anyone who mistakes the open ground for an escape from the armies near the mountain.

Terror Wing Path lies among the eastern hills. Black drakes patrol above the route, while lesser dragonkin and broodlings occupy the surrounding country. Their numbers make the region more than the territory of a single wandering monster. They form a dangerous belt of creatures between the scorched heart of the steppes and the roads that lead back toward Redridge Mountains. Even experienced travelers have reason to fear the passage, for a drake can strike from above while its kin close the way ahead.

The black dragonflight’s strength in this region cannot be separated from Blackrock Spire. Nefarian and his followers hold power in the upper mountain, while Dark Iron dwarves and other hostile forces occupy different reaches below. The steppes surrounding that struggle are not neatly divided into safe and unsafe territories. The dragons’ influence spills outward from the mountain and turns the eastern approach into another front in a conflict that reaches from underground halls to the sky.

At Morgan’s Vigil, Helendis Riverhorn makes the immediate danger plain. The camp is close enough to see black broodlings, dragonspawn, wyrmkin and drakes gathering beyond its ridge. His appeal for help is not a campaign to conquer the dragonflight’s domain; it is an effort to keep the creatures from overwhelming the limited defenders of Stormwind’s northern road. The same outpost must watch Blackrock orcs, Firegut ogres and Dark Iron agents. Dragonkin make an already impossible frontier still harder to defend.

The path’s importance lies in what it reveals about power around Blackrock. A fortress can be besieged, a roadblock cleared and an ogre camp attacked, but dragons make the whole landscape uncertain. Terror Wing Path has no grand court or famous treaty to mark its history. It is where the ambitions of the black dragonflight become a daily danger to soldiers and travelers, and where the struggle for the Burning Steppes cannot be understood simply as another war between orcs and humans.
