Quick Overview

Stormwind City was rebuilt after the Old Horde destroyed the capital during the First War. Its restoration created conflict when Edwin VanCleef's Stonemasons were denied payment and became the Defias Brotherhood. The young king and Bolvar Fordragon now face a court secretly manipulated by Onyxia, disguised as Katrana Prestor.

Full History

Stormwind is the rebuilt capital of the human kingdom once known simply as Azeroth. Its story begins with a disaster. During the First War, the Old Horde swept north from the Dark Portal, and the city ultimately fell after the death of King Llane Wrynn. Anduin Lothar led survivors across the Great Sea to Lordaeron, where they helped forge the Alliance that later defeated the Horde. Those exiles carried with them both the memory of their ruined home and the political promise that Stormwind could someday stand again. The city's present walls and canals are the result of that return, not the untouched architecture of a kingdom spared by history.

Reconstruction after the Second War came at a social cost. The Stonemasons' Guild, led by Edwin VanCleef, rebuilt much of the city but was denied the compensation its workers demanded. Their bitterness and expulsion led to the rise of the Defias Brotherhood, whose banditry in Westfall and infiltration of Elwynn exposed the limits of the kingdom's recovery. The city gates, Cathedral Square, the Mage Quarter, the Dwarven District, and the Trade District show a capital once again filled with citizens, faith, scholarship, and commerce. Yet the labor dispute makes the city's restored grandeur inseparable from grievances among those who created it.

Stormwind's political center also faces a hidden enemy. After King Varian Wrynn disappeared, his young son Anduin Wrynn occupied the throne while Regent Lord Bolvar Fordragon and the nobility conducted affairs of state. The missing king left the court especially vulnerable to manipulation. Lady Katrana Prestor exerts influence at court, concealing her true identity as the black dragon Onyxia. The royal household is thus caught between the external threats on its frontiers and manipulation from within. The Old Town and the Stockade likewise reflect a kingdom that requires soldiers and prisons as well as churches and markets.

At the original world's opening, Stormwind is the heart of the Alliance's southern human power, linked to Ironforge and distant allies by shared military needs and trade. It is strong enough to be called a capital, but it is not fully healed from the First War or the later betrayals of reconstruction. Its history joins a fallen kingdom, refugees who reclaimed their homeland, builders who became rebels, and a royal court still vulnerable to an ancient enemy hiding in plain sight.
