Quick Overview
The Kingdom of Azeroth lost its capital when the first Horde invaded through the Dark Portal. King Llane was murdered, Stormwind fell, and Anduin Lothar led survivors north to Lordaeron. Their exile helped bring the human kingdoms together against the Horde in the Second War.
Full History
For generations the Kingdom of Azeroth was ruled from Stormwind, the great human city south of Khaz Modan. That order began to collapse when the orcish Horde passed through the Dark Portal. The kingdom fought to defend its towns and strongholds, but the war culminated in the death of King Llane Wrynn and the loss of Stormwind itself.
Anduin Lothar led the surviving people north across the sea to seek aid from King Terenas of Lordaeron. The refugees carried firsthand knowledge of the Horde's strength and of what defeat could mean for the remaining human kingdoms. Lothar's warning helped rally an alliance that joined Lordaeron, other human realms and their neighbors against the coming invasion.
The kingdom's fall therefore changed the history of the entire eastern continent. Stormwind's people had lost their home, but their arrival in Lordaeron transformed a southern war into a common struggle. Following the Horde's defeat in the Second War, the survivors and their allies began the long work of rebuilding the kingdom that had fallen.
