Quick Overview
Khadgar and Garona uncovered signs that Medivh, Azeroth's Guardian, was involved in the opening of the Dark Portal. Their investigation exposed a danger far greater than the orc raids troubling Stormwind. The discovery brought the Guardian's allies to the realization that stopping the invasion required confronting the man entrusted with defending the world.
Full History
As the First War gathered momentum, the Kingdom of Azeroth struggled to explain the invading orcs and the portal through which they had come. Medivh occupied a place that should have made him a powerful defender against such threats. He was the heir to the Guardians of Tirisfal, trained in a tradition established to oppose demonic influence. Yet his strange actions and secret dealings suggested that the kingdom's danger might have roots much closer to its own magical guardianship.
Khadgar, the young mage sent to study under Medivh, encountered the Guardian's mysteries from within Karazhan. Garona, an orc with ties to the Shadow Council and the world of the invaders, held knowledge from another side of the conflict. Their perspectives proved crucial in understanding the relationship between Medivh and Gul'dan. The inquiry gradually revealed that the Guardian was not merely failing to stop the Horde; he had helped make its passage possible.
The revelation carried the weight of older history. Medivh had inherited Aegwynn's tremendous power and, unknown to her, the influence of Sargeras that survived her battle against the titan's avatar. The Dark Portal was therefore tied to the Burning Legion's long ambitions for Azeroth. It was not a natural accident nor an incursion that Stormwind could solve solely by guarding its borders.
Khadgar and Garona's discoveries led toward the confrontation at Karazhan in which Anduin Lothar also took part. Medivh was defeated, but neither the Horde nor the devastation of the First War disappeared with him. The investigation changed the historical understanding of the invasion: the conflict between human and orc armies was bound to a corrupted Guardian and to the ancient enemy that had first threatened Azeroth during the War of the Ancients.
