Full History

The Dark Portal was opened through the machinations of Medivh and Gul’dan, joining Draenor to Azeroth. Through it the first orcish armies entered the Eastern Kingdoms and began the First War against Stormwind.

The Second War broadened the conflict into a struggle across Lordaeron and Khaz Modan. At its conclusion the Alliance struck the Horde and the portal itself, and further campaigns through the gateway helped lead to Draenor’s shattering into the shattered remains of Draenor.

The doorway was not an accidental path discovered by wandering orcs. Its opening emerged from the plans of powers already manipulating both sides of the divide: the corrupted Medivh on Azeroth and Gul'dan among the warlocks of Draenor. The first orcish clans crossed into a world whose human kingdoms knew little of them, while the Horde carried a history already scarred by demonic bargains and war against the draenei. Stormwind initially confronted raids and border attacks; the conflict grew into a kingdom-destroying invasion. The Portal thus represents the moment an unseen conspiracy became an open war affecting generations.

After Stormwind fell, the Second War carried the Horde north and forced the surviving human kingdoms to form an Alliance that could meet it. The Portal continued to determine strategic decisions even when battles moved far from the Blasted Lands. The eventual Alliance campaign into Draenor proved that closing a gateway was not the same as understanding the threat on its far side. The destruction of Draenor and the scattering of its remains into the shattered remains of Draenor gave the Portal an even darker meaning. Its stones tie together the founding of the Alliance of Lordaeron, the rise and collapse of the old Horde, and the refugee journeys through which a different Horde would later emerge.

The structure remains a landmark of the moment Azeroth’s history ceased to be confined to one world. Its presence in the Blasted Lands links the ruined ecology of the region to the larger consequences of demonic manipulation and the wars between humans and orcs.
