Quick Overview

The Guardian Aegwynn defeated a physical manifestation of Sargeras in a battle that seemed to secure Azeroth from the Legion. The victory concealed a deeper danger: Sargeras's spirit passed into her and later into her son Medivh. The encounter shaped the catastrophe that would ultimately open the Dark Portal.

Full History

For many generations the Guardians of Tirisfal stood against demonic threats that ordinary soldiers and spellcasters could not hope to defeat. Aegwynn became one of the most formidable of their number, carrying powers accumulated through the order's secret traditions. During her long guardianship she confronted a manifestation of Sargeras while defending Azeroth from the Legion's influence. In the immediate struggle she prevailed, apparently destroying the threat before it could bring ruin to the world.

The seeming triumph hid a design that Aegwynn did not recognize. Though the avatar was defeated, Sargeras's spirit found a way to survive through the Guardian herself. In the original historical account, this concealed influence would later reach the child to whom Aegwynn passed her power. A battle remembered as a victory therefore became the means by which a much older enemy moved closer to the center of Azeroth's magical defenses.

Aegwynn eventually chose Nielas Aran as the father of Medivh, intending that her son inherit the power of the Guardian outside the Council's direct control. Medivh's childhood was marked by a terrible eruption of magic and a prolonged coma. The latent presence of Sargeras helps explain why the last Guardian's later choices could not simply be understood as those of an independent mortal scholar.

When Medivh reached maturity, his secret dealings with Gul'dan helped open the Dark Portal between Draenor and Azeroth. The orcish invasion followed, drawing Stormwind into the First War. Thus Aegwynn's duel with Sargeras was not an isolated episode of Guardian heroism. Its hidden consequence connected ancient demonic ambition with one of the defining disasters of the human kingdoms, showing how a single compromised defense could undo generations of vigilance.
