Quick Overview
Kil'jaeden used the shaman Ner'zhul as an instrument in the Burning Legion's plan to turn Draenor's orcs into an army. Religious authority and fear were redirected toward hostility and conquest, preparing the way for Gul'dan's warlocks. The manipulation reshaped the clans long before the Dark Portal brought them to Azeroth.
Full History
The orc clans of Draenor once relied on shamans to preserve relationships with ancestral and elemental powers. Their spiritual leaders possessed authority that could influence decisions across clan boundaries, even where no single political ruler could command every tribe. Kil'jaeden exploited that authority as the Burning Legion sought a new army. Rather than appearing to every clan as an openly demonic conqueror, he manipulated figures who already held the trust of their people.
Ner'zhul of the Shadowmoon clan became central to the deception. Through false guidance and fear, the orcs were driven toward a hostility that could be organized into war. The process changed the meaning of obedience: customs once used to honor ancestors and maintain clan identity were increasingly subordinated to commands that served a power outside Draenor. What seemed to many orcs a path to strength and survival drew them away from their own traditions.
As Ner'zhul began to question the source of this guidance, Gul'dan proved willing to embrace the power his elder had come to fear. Warlocks acquired influence, and the Shadow Council began to direct the emerging Horde from behind its public military leadership. The eventual blood oath to Mannoroth bound many warriors more fully to the Legion. The orcish clans' transformation was therefore gradual: spiritual deception preceded the worst visible acts of demonic corruption.
The result was a war machine that could be turned against Draenor's inhabitants and, later, against Azeroth. Orcs who opposed this transformation, such as Durotan, were punished or driven away. The New Horde that Thrall later built would have to reckon with those events and recover parts of the culture that had been displaced. Kil'jaeden's early manipulation helps explain how a people with its own independent societies came to serve the strategic purposes of the Burning Legion.
