Quick Overview
Durotan of the Frostwolf clan and Orgrim Doomhammer of the Blackrock clan formed a friendship before the Horde's great wars. Their bond crossed the divisions of orcish clan society and endured as the old shamanic order was undermined. The contrast between their later paths reveals how deeply demonic corruption divided the orcs.
Full History
In the years before the opening of the Dark Portal, Durotan and Orgrim Doomhammer were young orcs whose lives were shaped by different clans. Durotan belonged to the Frostwolves, while Orgrim was a member of the powerful Blackrock clan. They met in the world of Draenor before its peoples had become a unified conquering Horde. Their friendship shows that clan loyalty did not necessarily prevent meaningful bonds with outsiders.
The two orcs grew to adulthood during an increasingly dangerous period for their people. Orcish shamans lost influence as the Burning Legion's agents manipulated the clans, and Gul'dan's followers encouraged the transformation of warriors into instruments of conquest. Durotan questioned the path that drew the orcs away from their inherited customs. Orgrim, bound to the military hierarchy in which Blackhand held command, faced different pressures and opportunities.
Durotan eventually refused to accept the full corruption demanded by Gul'dan and the Legion. The Frostwolves were driven into exile, and Durotan and Draka were later murdered. Orgrim's eventual overthrow of Blackhand did not undo the violence suffered by his old friend. The relationship nevertheless remained part of the history that led from the Old Horde's wars to the survival of Durotan's son, Thrall.
Thrall would later come to know the truth of his parentage and seek an orcish identity beyond slavery and demonic domination. Orgrim became a consequential figure in that journey. The older friendship thus outlasted the collapse of the world in which it had begun. It joins the story of Draenor's clan customs to the emergence of the New Horde, showing that loyalty between individuals could preserve a measure of older honor amid political corruption.
