Quick Overview
The Horde's encounters with Stormwind's knights forced its commanders to reconsider early invasion tactics. Raiding alone was insufficient against organized human cavalry and coordinated defense. Lessons learned from defeat helped shape the escalation from frontier attacks to a larger war.
Full History
The orcish clans had entered Azeroth under leaders trained for warfare on Draenor, not for campaigns against the human kingdom of Azeroth. The first scouts discovered farms and settlements, and early raiders proved capable of striking vulnerable communities. Yet the kingdom's best troops were unlike isolated rural defenders. When the Horde attacked Stormwind, heavily armed knights and organized counterattacks demonstrated the limits of the invaders' opening methods.
Garona's early account presents the resulting retreat as an important lesson. Orcish leaders recognized the mobility and discipline of the human cavalry and began revising the way they fought. The process did not transform the Horde into a human army, nor does it imply a single instant in which all tactical disadvantages were overcome. It shows an invading force responding to resistance with observation and adaptation.
The defenders were changing as well. Llane and Lothar mobilized soldiers for frontier communities and the capital, discovering that the swamps near the Dark Portal supplied repeated assaults. What began as a mysterious threat across the eastern border developed into a conflict between two military systems, each tested by an enemy from an unfamiliar world.
The ultimate fall of Stormwind should not obscure these early reverses. The Horde's victory emerged through a wider course of campaigns rather than an inevitable outcome decided at the Portal. Its adaptation after confronting the knights marks one step in that development.
