Quick Overview
Llane Wrynn was king of Stormwind when the Dark Portal opened and the orcish Horde invaded the southern human kingdom. He relied on his old friend Anduin Lothar to defend the realm, while the secret corruption of another friend, Medivh, helped bring the invaders into Azeroth. Llane's confidence that Stormwind could endure faltered as the Horde strengthened and the war reached his capital. His assassination by Garona helped seal the kingdom's defeat and drove its survivors north.
Full History
Llane Wrynn inherited more than the crown of Stormwind. He belonged to a generation that had grown up beside Anduin Lothar and Medivh, three young men whose lives would become inseparable from the ruin of their kingdom. Llane assumed responsibility for a realm of prosperous towns, defended roads, and far-flung holdings south of the northern human kingdoms. In his early reign, the danger that would overturn that world was almost impossible to imagine: an army arriving from another world through a gate hidden in the eastern marshes.
The Dark Portal opened through the designs of the possessed Guardian Medivh and the orc warlocks who served Gul'dan. Orcish raiders emerged into the Black Morass and tested Stormwind's defenses, striking settlements before human patrols could react. Llane and Lothar had little reliable knowledge of their enemy's size or resources. The king looked to the soldiers and institutions that had always protected his country; Lothar increasingly believed that meeting the threat required taking the war to the invaders themselves.
The darkness surrounding Medivh made the crisis more bitter. Once a companion of the king, the Guardian had become an instrument of Sargeras, though few knew what had happened to him. Llane sensed that his friend was troubled, while Lothar and the young mage Khadgar came to suspect something far more dangerous. Their investigation led to Karazhan and the confrontation that ended Medivh's mortal life. Yet even the destruction of the power behind the portal could not recall the orcs already marching across Stormwind's lands.
The Horde's first attacks had been scattered, but Blackhand's warriors and the warlocks behind him gathered strength. Llane underestimated how swiftly this new enemy could threaten the capital. As the war worsened, nobles, soldiers, and ordinary families faced the prospect that Stormwind itself might fall. The king remained the focus of resistance, but a king could not command the eastern marches back into safety by courage alone. The realm's survival depended on forces already stretched by years of fighting.
Garona Halforcen, the half-orc who had moved between the orcs and Medivh's circle, stood at the center of the final betrayal. Though she had come to know Llane, she was also bound to the machinations of the Shadow Council. She assassinated the king as the Horde's victory approached. Stormwind lost its sovereign at the moment its defenders most needed unity. Lothar's return from Karazhan could not reverse the disaster, and the city fell amid burning streets and fleeing survivors.
The consequences extended far beyond Llane's death. Lothar led refugees north to Lordaeron, where the human kingdoms confronted the fact that Stormwind's fate could become their own. The young Wrynn heir inherited a broken kingdom and a name that would endure through exile and eventual restoration. Llane's tragedy begins with a king confronting an unrecognizable enemy and ends with a kingdom whose destruction forced the scattered human nations into a new alliance.
