Quick Overview

Stormwind's first defense against the orcs fell to King Llane and his champion Anduin Lothar, who confronted an enemy from beyond their world. The retreat demonstrated that the orcs could be beaten, but not that the portal or the armies behind it had been destroyed. The first defenses matter because they show the human response before the outcome was known: determination, adaptation, and the false comfort of victories won against an enemy who could return.

Full History

Stormwind's first defense against the orcs fell to King Llane and his champion Anduin Lothar, who confronted an enemy from beyond their world. Reports of raids reached settlements along the border, forcing footmen, archers, and knights into hurried action. One major assault on the capital was repulsed, but the invading forces continued to threaten the kingdom. Early success could not decide the war.

The original Warcraft manual's Lothar account describes preparations among defenders still learning how the orcs fought. It records attacks on settlements, attempts to gather recruits, and reports of captives taken toward the eastern swamps whose fates were unknown. In one great attack, the Horde pressed into Stormwind before mounted human forces turned the battle. The retreat demonstrated that the orcs could be beaten, but not that the portal or the armies behind it had been destroyed.

Llane's succession and Lothar's service belong to the history of a kingdom facing danger that its institutions had never been designed to meet. Later campaigns would bring far heavier losses and finally exile. The first defenses matter because they show the human response before the outcome was known: determination, adaptation, and the false comfort of victories won against an enemy who could return.
