Quick Overview

Anduin Lothar's expedition to the Deadmines became a long absence from Stormwind's defense. The original human campaign places his capture among ogres associated with Turok and a mission to recover the Tome of Divinity. His eventual rescue restored a vital commander to a kingdom already threatened by orcs.

Full History

Lothar was more than a battlefield captain. As a longtime companion of Llane Wrynn and Medivh, he stood close to the kingdom's leadership before the First War grew into a struggle for survival. His campaigns and assignments carried him beyond the capital into dangerous regions that could delay even an experienced knight. The Deadmines episode demonstrates that the dangers of the kingdom were not limited to the newly arrived Horde.

In the early human campaign, Lothar pursued the Tome of Divinity and fell into the hands of ogres led by Turok. The mission briefing describes an extended period of captivity, counted as twenty months, before he was recovered. The episode belongs to the account of Stormwind's war as preserved by the original game, whose campaign framing must be distinguished from a later dramatized retelling of the same era.

His disappearance would have deprived Llane of a trusted military leader during a period in which orc raiders were learning the land and expanding their assaults. Recovery meant that the kingdom regained a man whose experience, reputation, and relationship with its king would become crucial in the defense and eventual evacuation of survivors.

Lothar's importance persisted beyond the fall of Stormwind. He carried the warnings of the ruined southern kingdom to Lordaeron, helped organize the northern alliance, and led forces against the Horde during the Second War. The Deadmines rescue is thus an earlier episode in the career of a commander whose greatest historical influence would come after his homeland was lost.
