Quick Overview

The Deadmines began as a rich mining complex beneath Westfall, but became the headquarters of the Defias Brotherhood. Edwin VanCleef and his followers turned the abandoned tunnels into workshops and a hidden shipbuilding operation. Their rise grew from the bitter aftermath of Stormwind's rebuilding and the failure to pay the stonemasons. The dungeon brings Westfall's poverty and political anger underground.

Full History

Westfall's empty farms, watchtowers and hungry settlements tell only half of its story. Beneath the hills lies the old Deadmines complex, once an important part of the kingdom's wealth and later abandoned as the province fell into disorder. This network offered space for conspirators to gather unseen while the authorities in Stormwind struggled to understand the breadth of unrest beyond the city gates.

Edwin VanCleef, formerly a master of the Stonemasons' Guild, became the leader of the Defias Brotherhood after the painful dispute over the rebuilding of Stormwind. Those who followed him carried both legitimate grievances and a willingness to punish an entire kingdom for them. In the Deadmines, workers and rogues prepared weapons and assembled a ship in a cavern far removed from the open farmlands. The operation demonstrates that the bandits were not a random collection of thieves: they were building the means to strike back at the city that had betrayed them.

An adventurer who descends into the mine discovers the industrial heart of a political revolt. The story is better told as the history of a broken labor bargain, a displaced countryside and an increasingly violent conspiracy than as a catalog of bosses. It connects directly to Moonbrook, Sentinel Hill, VanCleef and Stormwind, while the consequences of player intervention remain unasserted in the baseline world.
