Full History
Moonbrook was once a human settlement tied to Westfall’s fertile farms and the roads toward Stormwind. As the kingdom’s western countryside declined, the town lost its ordinary purpose and became increasingly isolated from royal authority.
The Defias Brotherhood turned abandoned buildings and underground workings into a center of its rebellion. Beneath the streets lie approaches to the Deadmines, where Edwin VanCleef’s followers prepare an armed challenge to the rulers who refused to pay the craftsmen who rebuilt Stormwind.
The bitterness that consumed Moonbrook began far from its ruined streets. Stormwind's reconstruction had demanded extraordinary labor, and the Stonemasons' Guild had supplied the skilled hands needed to raise the capital again. Edwin VanCleef believed those workers had earned their pay and public honor. When the dispute with the nobles ended without the settlement they expected, the craftsmen's grievance became a rebellion. Former builders turned the skills that had restored a city toward fortifying hidden passages, weapons and a plan to strike at the crown. The path from guild hall to outlaw camp is essential to understanding why Moonbrook is not just another hideout occupied by bandits.
From the neglected farms nearby, the rebellion gained room to breathe. Westfall's soldiers were too few, its people exhausted and its abandoned infrastructure easy to seize. In the Deadmines the Defias assembled manpower and machinery on a scale that made their threat more than a local crime wave. Yet their methods also deepened the misery of Westfall's common folk, the very people whose exploitation had helped give their revolt its origin. The town captures that contradiction: a movement born from real wrongdoing grew into another force terrorizing an impoverished countryside. Moonbrook's loss is therefore as much political and social as military.
Moonbrook carries the clearest scars of the collapse of a working community into a revolutionary stronghold. Its ruins are not an ancient curse: they are the consequence of unpaid labor, disillusionment, crime and the failure of the restored kingdom to reconcile with its own people.
