Quick Overview
Mathias Shaw led Stormwind’s secret intelligence service in the original era. He had known Edwin VanCleef since childhood and taught him the skills of stealth before their paths separated. Shaw’s investigation of the Defias Brotherhood revealed that Stormwind’s crisis was rooted partly in the kingdom’s treatment of the people who rebuilt it.
Full History
Mathias Shaw occupied a difficult place in restored Stormwind. As master of SI:7, he was responsible for learning what hostile networks were doing beneath the notice of ordinary guards and officials. Yet his knowledge was more than institutional. Edwin VanCleef, the builder who would lead the Defias Brotherhood, had been Shaw’s childhood friend. Shaw personally instructed him in the practices of stealth and subterfuge, skills later useful to a leader intent on evading the kingdom he wished to punish.
When disturbances in Westfall threatened to become an outright rebellion, Gryan Stoutmantle sought help understanding the Defias organization. Shaw’s written report explained the historical breach behind its founding. The Stonemasons had rebuilt Stormwind after its destruction, but the nobles had run up enormous debts and refused the workers their promised payment. The report did not simply denounce VanCleef as a criminal; it recognized the injustice that helped turn a guild of skilled builders into a dangerous brotherhood.
The report makes Shaw an important witness to Stormwind’s contradictions. His loyalty to the city required him to oppose VanCleef’s violent schemes, while his own knowledge made it impossible to pretend the rebels appeared without cause. Linking Shaw to Westfall, Moonbrook, the Stonemasons, and SI:7 lets the larger history reveal how a war won against the old Horde gave way to conflict within a supposedly restored human kingdom.
