Quick Overview

Edwin VanCleef led the stonemasons who helped rebuild Stormwind after its destruction in the First War. When the city's nobles refused to pay the workers, the dispute broke into bitterness and violence. VanCleef formed the Defias Brotherhood from the betrayed laborers and their allies. The rebellion turned the kingdom's own reconstruction into a threat from within.

Full History

Edwin VanCleef once worked to restore what the Horde had destroyed. Stormwind's return from ruin demanded masons, craftsmen, and laborers capable of raising a city whose walls and streets had been shattered in the First War. VanCleef led the Stonemasons' Guild in that work. The reconstruction gave displaced people hope that the southern kingdom could recover, but the men who did the rebuilding soon found themselves in conflict with the nobles who controlled its treasury.

When payment was denied, the laborers' grievance hardened into open hostility. The dispute ended in violence and expulsion rather than settlement. VanCleef gathered those who felt cheated into the Defias Brotherhood, a movement no longer satisfied with claiming unpaid wages. Their resentment spread through Westfall and the surrounding lands, where farms and communities already struggled with insecurity.

The Deadmines became an important refuge for the Brotherhood and a place from which it could organize a direct challenge to Stormwind. The irony of VanCleef's career was brutal: a man who had rebuilt the capital now worked to undermine the kingdom that had refused to honor his labor. The Defias crisis was born not from an enemy army crossing the border, but from a failure within the restored kingdom itself.
