Full History

Stormwind had risen again after its destruction in the First War, but its restored walls concealed serious vulnerabilities. The Defias Brotherhood threatened the kingdom from Westfall, while Katrana Prestor exerted influence within the court. The opening World of Warcraft world is therefore not an age of unquestioned human renewal. Recovery from war had left grievances and opportunities for enemies close to the throne.

VanCleef's Defias organized among people alienated from Stormwind's political order, establishing a base in the Deadmines. Their campaign against the city grew from unresolved disputes as well as criminal violence. Within the capital, Onyxia's disguise as a noblewoman enabled manipulation of those who believed they served the kingdom. Both threats exploited weaknesses that could not be met simply by building stronger outer defenses.

The historical endpoint leaves these dangers active. Original quests and dungeons offer ways for characters to confront them, but the chronicle does not assume those adventures have already taken place. Stormwind's condition is the important fact: a kingdom that survived exile and reconstruction still faced dangers from its own institutions and the unaddressed injuries of its recent past.
