Quick Overview
The Defias Brotherhood arose from the Stonemasons Guild's bitter dispute with Stormwind's nobility over the rebuilding of the city. Under Edwin VanCleef, dispossessed laborers and criminals became a rebel organization operating from Westfall and the Deadmines. Their campaign exposes the social and political consequences of Stormwind's postwar reconstruction.
Full History
The Defias Brotherhood did not begin as a foreign army invading Stormwind. Its founding grievance came from within the kingdom's own reconstruction. After the devastation of the First War and the Alliance's victory in the Second, the capital of Stormwind was rebuilt through the labor of skilled stonemasons and other workers. The renewed walls and towers stood as evidence that the kingdom had survived. To the men who had raised them, however, the unfinished question of payment became an insult they could not ignore.
Edwin VanCleef, their guildmaster, sought compensation from the rulers who had benefited from that labor. The confrontation ended badly. The Stonemasons Guild was disbanded, and resentment hardened into open rebellion. The Brotherhood that emerged bore the marks of its origins: it possessed practical craftsmen, knowledge of the city's defenses, and a sense that Stormwind's nobles had broken a bargain with their own people. Not everyone gathered under its banner shared that original grievance. Bandits and other criminals found refuge in the same organization, making it increasingly violent and predatory.
VanCleef's followers failed to establish lasting control around Elwynn and turned toward neglected Westfall, where the kingdom's weak presence gave them room to operate. The Deadmines beneath Moonbrook became a secret industrial fortress, not just a hiding place. Defias networks spread across farms, roads, and settlements, harassing the countryside while their leadership prepared a more ambitious threat to Stormwind. Their efforts placed ordinary villagers in the path of a rebellion they had not necessarily chosen.
Opposing them was the People's Militia at Sentinel Hill, led by Gryan Stoutmantle and sustained by those willing to confront the Brotherhood's agents. The struggle reveals a painful contradiction in Stormwind's history: the restored capital is threatened by a faction created from the failure to pay the people who restored it. In patch 1.1 VanCleef remains alive, the Deadmines remain his stronghold, and the outcome of the rebellion should not be described as an accomplished victory.
