Full History

The rebuilding of Stormwind was one of the great civic labors to follow the wars with the orcs. Walls, streets and public buildings had to rise where armies had left ruin. Among those who performed the work was Baros Alexston, a member of the Stonemasons' Guild who would later become one of the city's architects. His history sits at the point where a national triumph turned into a political wound. The city regained its proud towers, but many of the hands that built them were left without the promised payment.

Edwin VanCleef led the Stonemasons during the crisis. Guild members demanded that the ruling House of Nobles honor its obligations for the reconstruction. When those demands were rebuffed and the guild was ordered broken up, anger grew into unrest. VanCleef and many followers departed Stormwind in rebellion; their organization became the Defias Brotherhood, whose influence spread into Westfall and beyond. Baros chose another road. He did not join his former colleague in the uprising, instead remaining within the civic structure that had failed their guild.

His own report on the Brotherhood is an unusually revealing source for the conflict. It is not merely an enemy's description of bandits in the fields; it comes from a man who had worked among the masons and knew the debt from inside the guild. The account acknowledges the central grievance even as it explains the subsequent violence. That is why Baros deserves an article separate from VanCleef. They shared the same past, but they made different decisions when legitimate anger threatened to become an armed campaign against the kingdom itself.

By the time travelers arrived in Stormwind at the opening of World of Warcraft, Baros represented continuity within the city while the Defias represented a bitter consequence of its political failures. The contrast was visible beyond the capital. In Westfall, farmers were driven from their land and local defenders organized a militia because the capital could not secure the countryside. The rebellion was no longer a dispute over wages alone; it had become an everyday danger to people who had never negotiated the Stonemasons' contract.

Baros's deeper motives for staying need not be invented. The surviving documents show his guild membership, his acquaintance with VanCleef, his choice to remain and his role as an architect and witness. From those facts emerges a more difficult history than a simple tale of heroes rebuilding a city. Stormwind's stonework endured, but the settlement of its debts divided friends and helped produce an enemy who would occupy the mines beneath Moonbrook.
