Full History

From the tower at Sentinel Hill, Gryan Stoutmantle watched over a kingdom's neglected breadbasket. Westfall had once been associated with prosperous farms, but by the opening of World of Warcraft its fields were stalked by bandits and its roads were uncertain. The Defias Brotherhood had entrenched itself in the countryside while Stormwind struggled with crises closer to the capital. Gryan could not wait for a perfect royal response. He organized the People's Militia and recruited help wherever he could find it.

His work belonged to a different scale than the wars described in the great chronicles. He did not command the Alliance at Blackrock Mountain or confront the Burning Legion at Mount Hyjal. He was responsible for roads, fields and families who needed to be able to live without fear. Such tasks lacked heroic grandeur until one understood the consequences of failure. Farms that could not be worked meant hunger; roads that could not be crossed meant isolation; a mine occupied by organized outlaws became a launching point for further threats.

The Brotherhood's origins made his problem particularly difficult. Its roots lay with the Stonemasons who rebuilt Stormwind and then failed to obtain the compensation they believed was owed. Edwin VanCleef's rebellion gained followers in part because the injustice was real. But a grievance did not justify the violence inflicted on Westfall's residents. Gryan's militia had to defend people who had no hand in the dispute while confronting an organization whose leaders viewed the kingdom itself as an enemy.

The old quests portray Gryan recruiting adventurers at Sentinel Hill, sending them against Defias bands and gradually confronting the breadth of the Brotherhood's power. His defense also had limits. When Lakeshire called for aid against trouble in Redridge, Gryan could not spare the people Westfall needed for its own survival. The refusal is a sharp illustration of how fractured the kingdom's security had become. A neighboring community's emergency was real, but so was the danger of leaving Westfall undefended.

Gryan's role culminates in the wider effort to reach the Defias leadership beneath Moonbrook, in the Deadmines. The launch-era story does not need his later promotions, travels to Northrend or the eventual resurgence of the Brotherhood to explain his significance. He was the local organizer who turned desperate citizens and volunteers into a force capable of resisting a criminal power. In a world of kings and world-shaping sorcerers, his achievement was to keep ordinary people from being abandoned to their fate.
