Quick Overview
The Stonemasons rebuilt Stormwind after the First War under Edwin VanCleef’s leadership. When the kingdom failed to pay the promised reward, the guild’s victory of craftsmanship became an economic disaster. Its ruin helped create the Defias Brotherhood and the rebellion that spread into Westfall.
Full History
Stormwind’s reconstruction was one of the great practical undertakings after the First War. The city had been devastated by the old Horde, and its return required architects, stoneworkers, carpenters, and other builders capable of restoring walls and public buildings. Edwin VanCleef’s Stonemasons were entrusted with that work. Their skill shaped structures central to the rebuilt kingdom, including the Cathedral of Light and the royal keep. To the workers, the project should have meant both professional pride and the security of an agreed payment.
Instead, the finances of the restored kingdom deteriorated under the strain of expanding its military commitments. Mathias Shaw’s investigation of the Defias Brotherhood revealed that Stormwind’s nobles had failed to honor their debt to the guild. Builders who had spent years reclaiming the capital were left ruined. The injustice was not a rumor invented by the rebels; the king’s own intelligence service acknowledged the unpaid labor and its destructive consequences.
From that breach arose a far larger crisis. VanCleef transformed the resentment of his former workers into the core of the Defias Brotherhood, which established networks of brigands, engineers, and collaborators across Westfall and beyond. The Stonemasons’ story explains why the unrest of Moonbrook and the Deadmines cannot be reduced to simple criminality. The workers had rebuilt the kingdom that rejected them, and their leader redirected the skills of construction toward undermining the state he had once served.
