Quick Overview

Elwynn Forest is Stormwind's agricultural and military heartland, rebuilt after the First War devastated the old kingdom. Northshire Abbey and Goldshire stand amid farms, mines, and roads on which the capital depends. By the original World of Warcraft opening, Defias bandits, kobolds, gnolls, and murlocs reveal how thinly Stormwind's restored authority is spread.

Full History

Elwynn seems a gentle country to travelers arriving through the gates of Stormwind. Its farms, vineyards, mills, and timber camps feed the capital, and its roads converge on Goldshire beneath the forest canopy. Yet this peace is the product of reconstruction rather than an unbroken inheritance. During the First War, the old Kingdom of Azeroth was devastated by the orcish Horde. Stormwind fell, survivors fled north with Anduin Lothar, and the country around the lost capital bore the scars of occupation and battle.

After the Alliance prevailed in the Second War, refugees returned and the work of rebuilding began. Northshire Abbey again served the people of the kingdom, while the reconstructed city drew supplies from Elwynn's farms and labor from its settlements. That recovery also created a new source of bitterness. The Stonemasons who restored Stormwind were not properly compensated; their leader Edwin VanCleef turned against the nobles who refused to settle their debt. The resulting Defias Brotherhood became more than a distant band of highwaymen. Its agents infiltrated farms and disrupted the very countryside whose labor supported Stormwind's restoration.

Northshire Valley illustrates the kingdom's fragile order. The abbey trains new defenders, but trouble brews in the nearby vineyards and in Echo Ridge Mine, where kobolds have occupied the workings. Beyond the valley, Fargodeep and Jasperlode mines are contested by the same creatures. Defias hideouts threaten homesteads; Riverpaw gnolls range along the western edge; and murlocs occupy lakes and waterways that should supply the settlements. The marshals of Goldshire and Northshire rely on local volunteers because the kingdom cannot place a regiment at every farmhouse.

Elwynn's history therefore reaches beyond its pastoral appearance. Its fields measure how thoroughly Stormwind recovered from destruction, and its bandit camps expose the unpaid cost of that recovery. The capital may stand restored, but the political breach created by rebuilding has never entirely healed. On the patch 1.1 frontier, a newcomer is not witnessing the start of a conquest: they are entering the unsettled aftermath of two great wars and a failed settlement between rulers and workers.
