Full History

Long before the armies of the Third War marched across Azeroth, many smaller peoples lived beyond the attention of human kings and orcish warlords. Murlocs settled coasts and waterways, kobolds burrowed into mines and caverns, and gnolls gathered in packs across wooded and open country. Their histories were rarely written in the chronicles of the larger kingdoms.

Expansion brought these populations into closer conflict with settlers. Human farms, trade roads and mines pressed into places already inhabited by other creatures. In Elwynn and Westfall, kobolds became a danger to miners and farmers; gnoll bands threatened roads through human-held provinces. Along the coasts, murloc settlements could impede fishing or passage. Those conflicts were local and repeated, rather than parts of one coordinated war.

It would be misleading to describe these different peoples as a single nation or common alliance. Their languages, homes and customs were distinct, and little of their remote past is reliably known. Their place in history is nevertheless important: the great powers repeatedly fought over lands that were never truly empty.
