Full History
Murlocs occupied coasts, shallows, and waterways across Azeroth, making them familiar to travelers who ventured beyond the protection of towns. Their settlements and amphibious way of life brought them into recurrent clashes with neighboring peoples. During Thrall's westward journey, hostile murlocs also became part of the crisis confronting the Darkspear trolls. A small coastal people could therefore shape events in the migration of a future Horde ally.
The original Warcraft III prologue describes captivity and danger on the islands where Thrall met Sen'jin's tribe. Murloc enemies participated in the ordeal that ended in the chieftain's death and the Darkspear's flight. Elsewhere, the early World of Warcraft game presents distinct murloc groups along waterways, threatening fishing grounds and outlying settlements. Such encounters show their local importance without making every murloc community participant in one common war.
The early sources do not establish a complete ancestral origin for murlocs or a universal political organization. Their documented roles are enough to reveal their influence on travel and coastal security. Their inclusion in the history also reminds readers that Azeroth's greatest migrations could turn on dangers encountered far from the capitals of empires.
