Quick Overview

Kobolds occupy mines and underground spaces across the Eastern Kingdoms. Their communities collide with human attempts to protect settlements and reclaim working ground, particularly around Northshire and Elwynn. Elsewhere, named groups such as the Drywhiskers appear within conflicts involving powers far removed from the struggles of a village mine.

Full History

Northshire's confrontation with kobolds develops during a shortage of defenders. Marshal McBride explains that much of Stormwind's army is occupied elsewhere, leaving the abbey and its surroundings exposed. A kobold clan has established itself nearby, and he calls for recruits to drive it away. The dispute reveals how a kingdom's wider military commitments can alter the balance around an ordinary settlement. People who expect protection from a capital must instead contest local ground with whatever help they can obtain.

Kobolds also enter the intelligence gathered against the Defias Brotherhood. Wiley reports that the Brotherhood has made allies among kobolds and gnolls. His warning places at least some kobold groups within a larger network of local enemies rather than treating every encounter as an isolated quarrel. Such cooperation does not establish a single ruler or purpose for all kobolds. It shows that communities around human territory can become participants in disputes originating inside human society.

The Drywhisker kobolds in Arathi occupy a different setting. Myzrael's appeal from a crystal directs attention toward their cavern and describes them as allies of the giants she blames for her imprisonment. Her account draws travelers into a struggle whose explanation comes from an interested participant. Across these regions, kobolds appear as organized local communities with their own positions and connections. Their known history is regional and uneven, shaped by clashes over occupied ground and by alliances that larger powers seek either to use or to destroy.
