Quick Overview

The Arathi Highlands were the center of the ancient human empire of Arathor, from which later human kingdoms emerged. Stromgarde retains the old capital's name but has fallen into a struggle among its remnants, the Syndicate, and ogres. Refuge Pointe and Hammerfall reveal how much the region's alliances and loyalties have changed since the Second War.

Full History

Long before Stormwind and Lordaeron defined the fortunes of humankind, the highlands of Arathi were home to Arathor. Under King Thoradin, scattered human tribes were united, and their growing realm became a great power in the north. Its capital, Strom, stood among the hills and fortifications of the region. The human alliance with the high elves against the Amani trolls helped shape both the political history of the Eastern Kingdoms and the later tradition of human magic. Arathi was therefore a birthplace of institutions whose influence reached far beyond its borders.

The empire did not remain one kingdom forever. As its people dispersed and new centers grew, Strom survived under the name Stromgarde, one successor among the kingdoms formed from the older union. In the Second War, King Thoras Trollbane committed Stromgarde to the Alliance of Lordaeron against the Horde. The land and its approaches mattered strategically: armies and caravans crossing between the northern kingdoms and Khaz Modan passed through territory long defended by Arathi's warriors. The Thandol Span remained an important bridge between these regions.

By the beginning of World of Warcraft, the grandeur of Arathor has given way to a contested borderland. The old city of Stromgarde is no longer securely held by its former rulers. Remnant defenders struggle for a foothold while Syndicate bands and Boulderfist ogres occupy parts of the ruined capital and surrounding country. Alliance interests gather around Refuge Pointe. Farther east, the Horde controls Hammerfall, a place connected to the history of orc internment and later claimed as a base by the new Horde. The population of the region no longer obeys a single throne or carries one political memory.

Arathi's ruins invite comparison between its founding promise and its fragmented present. Where humans once assembled a kingdom strong enough to defy the trolls, their descendants now dispute the stones of their first great capital. Where orcs were once held captive, a Horde outpost now stands. The patch 1.1 region is not an empty archaeological exhibit: Stromgarde's survivors, hostile occupiers, and rival factions are still determining what the legacy of Arathor will mean.
