Full History

The Witherbark belonged to the forest trolls whose ancestors had contested the northern Eastern Kingdoms long before the human kingdoms rose to power. The Troll Wars had driven the Amani back from the lands secured by the high elves and their allies, but scattered tribes endured. Some Witherbark settled among the hills and forests of Arathi, where older troll claims pressed against the frontiers of Stromgarde. Their village grew from that determination to remain.

During the Second War, forest trolls followed Zul'jin into the alliance with the orcish Horde in hopes of striking Quel'Thalas again. The defeat of the Horde did not settle their disputes with the human kingdoms. In southeastern Arathi, the Witherbark made a loose understanding with the nearby Boulderfist ogres, enemies who were otherwise little like them. Together they threatened Stromgarde and the Horde foothold at Hammerfall. The alliance was practical rather than evidence of a shared culture or lasting peace.

Witherbark Village represents the smaller struggles that continued after the great war leaders had withdrawn. Its inhabitants were heirs to ancient troll defeats, yet their immediate enemies were human soldiers, neighboring ogres and rival claims to the Arathi Highlands. The old empire had broken, but its surviving tribes still fought to decide who could hold the land.
