Full History

The high elves descended from the Highborne night elves who had once drawn upon the Well of Eternity. The War of the Ancients destroyed the center of their magical civilization and brought the Sundering, which divided Kalimdor and changed the world. When the surviving Highborne refused to abandon arcane practice, they became estranged from the society rebuilding under the night elves' new traditions.

Their exile carried them across the sea to the Eastern Kingdoms. In time they founded Quel'Thalas and raised the Sunwell as the heart of a new magical kingdom. Their war against the Amani forest trolls helped forge an alliance with the human kingdom of Arathor, and that partnership influenced the history of both peoples for generations.

The Second War again threatened their homeland, but the catastrophe of the Third War was far worse. Arthas led the Scourge into Quel'Thalas, destroyed its defenses, and used the Sunwell to raise Kel'Thuzad as a lich. The survivors faced the loss of their ruler, their cities, and the magical source around which their civilization had been built. Their long history of exile had reached another devastating turning point.
