Quick Overview
Ethel Rethor is a ruined night-elven site on Desolace’s northwestern coast. Much of its stonework stands submerged, and naga occupy the surrounding waters. The remains witness the destruction of older kaldorei settlements and the long reshaping of Kalimdor after the Sundering.
Full History
Long before the current peoples of Desolace divided its dry valleys, the ancient night elves maintained settlements across a far different Kalimdor. Their civilization was spread through regions whose coastlines were transformed by the destruction of the Well of Eternity. Ethel Rethor belongs to that vanished world. Its structures were built for a place that no longer exists in the same form, and parts of the site lie underwater rather than on firm ground.
Long after the Sundering, a solitary tower and broken causeways were among the visible remnants. Naga inhabited the nearby ruins and waters, making exploration hazardous. The presence of an elven ruin amid Desolace’s centaur territories is a reminder that the history of the region did not begin with Zaetar, Theradras, or the rise of the centaur. Those events changed the inland landscape, but the coastal stones record another, older catastrophe that reached beyond any one kingdom.
Ethel Rethor binds Desolace’s history to the Highborne, the Sundering, the naga, and neighboring ancient sites. The names of its ancient rulers and the purposes of its sealed chambers have been lost, leaving only fragments of their civilization above the waves. Treating that silence honestly gives the place historical value without inventing a dynasty for the sake of filling its empty halls.
