Quick Overview
The naga descended from Azshara’s Highborne, whose empire was shattered by the destruction of the Well of Eternity. Transformed beneath the sea, they retained loyalty to their queen and the ambitions of her lost court. Under Lady Vashj, naga forces resurfaced to aid Illidan during the wars that followed the Third War.
Full History
The naga were once Highborne night elves of Queen Azshara's empire, a civilization that drew its splendor and power from the Well of Eternity. Azshara's court welcomed the Burning Legion, believing that its master would bring a greater future. The invasion instead brought destruction. When the Well collapsed at the end of the War of the Ancients, the old imperial heartland was torn apart and swallowed by the sea.
Azshara and many who had served her survived beneath the waves, but they did not remain unchanged. Over the ages they became the naga, a people adapted to the ocean depths and still marked by their loyalty to the fallen queen. Their culture carried the ambitions of the Highborne into a new form, preserving memory of a world that had vanished long before the human kingdoms arose.
During the struggle that followed the Third War, naga emerged openly in the service of Lady Vashj. They aided Illidan Stormrage, fought against the night elves, and followed him beyond the Dark Portal into Outland. Their return to the surface showed that the Sundering had not ended the legacy of Azshara's court. It had driven that legacy into the ocean, where it endured until new wars called its descendants forth.
