Quick Overview

As the Burning Legion returned to Kalimdor, Tyrande Whisperwind awakened Malfurion Stormrage and released Illidan from his long imprisonment. The night elves needed every defender they could rally, yet Illidan's freedom revived old divisions over magic and duty. The choices prepared both the defense of Mount Hyjal and the conflict that would follow among the Stormrage brothers.

Full History

For thousands of years the night elves had guarded their forests through the Long Vigil. Tyrande Whisperwind led the Sentinels while Malfurion Stormrage and other druids spent long periods in the Emerald Dream. When the Burning Legion returned in the Third War, the old balance of sleeping guardians and waking defenders could no longer meet the danger. The invasion reached into the sacred lands of the kaldorei and threatened the legacy of the War of the Ancients.

Tyrande sought to awaken Malfurion, whose knowledge of druidic forces had been central to the first defeat of the Legion. She also faced a more controversial decision. Illidan Stormrage had been imprisoned since he created a second Well of Eternity, and his willingness to wield forbidden power had long estranged him from his people. Tyrande released him because the circumstances were desperate enough to demand help from someone she could not fully trust.

Illidan's return brought immediate military value but also renewed conflict. He pursued power capable of defeating the dreadlord Tichondrius and ultimately consumed the Skull of Gul'dan, transforming himself. Malfurion regarded the act as another surrender to dangerous magic and rejected his brother despite the victory over a Legion commander. Tyrande's decision had therefore strengthened the defense while reopening unresolved wounds from ancient history.

The surviving night elves joined human and orc forces at Mount Hyjal, where Archimonde was destroyed. Their victory came with a loss of the old blessings associated with Nordrassil. Illidan's path continued separately into the Frozen Throne campaign, pursued by Maiev Shadowsong and eventually allied with the naga. The awakening of Malfurion and release of Illidan thus marked the end of the Long Vigil's isolation and the beginning of two very different struggles against the Legion's legacy.
