Full History
The Lich King's weakening power drew Arthas back toward Icecrown while Illidan raced north to destroy the Frozen Throne. The contest brought two dangerous servants of greater powers into direct conflict. Arthas defeated Illidan and ascended the frozen spire. There he took the Helm of Domination, joining his fate with Ner'zhul and becoming the Lich King of the original Frozen Throne conclusion.
Arthas had already destroyed Lordaeron and served the Scourge as a death knight. Ner'zhul's call made the survival of their shared power dependent upon a swift return north. Illidan, pressured by Kil'jaeden, saw the Frozen Throne as a target whose destruction might free him from another master's demands. Their competing journeys brought armies, old allies, and surviving factions into the frozen wastes around Icecrown.
The final battle settled the immediate race: Illidan failed, and Arthas reached Ner'zhul's prison. The cinematic closes with the joining of their identities, not with a later campaign of Scourge conquest. At the original World of Warcraft starting point, the northern threat remains formidable but its distant future is not yet history. Icecrown's transformation marks the endpoint of Arthas's terrible journey from prince to undead ruler.
