Full History
Anub'arak met Arthas in Northrend and guided him through Azjol-Nerub toward Icecrown. The former nerubian king now served the Lich King, helping the death knight reach his master's threatened prison. Their journey passed beneath a fallen kingdom whose people had once resisted the Scourge's conquest.
Arthas had been recalled from Lordaeron because the Frozen Throne was in peril and his own strength was fading. A direct march across Northrend faced obstacles and enemies, making the underground routes through Azjol-Nerub a dangerous but necessary alternative. Anub'arak knew the tunnels of the old nerubian civilization, even though his service to the Scourge represented its defeat. The journey therefore displayed the terrible reach of the Lich King's power: a king had become the servant of the force that ruined his realm.
Together the two fought their way toward Icecrown as Illidan's army contested the approaches. The passage was an essential stage in Arthas's return, not a separate conquest begun for its own sake. It brought the former prince closer to the duel and ascension that would complete the Frozen Throne campaign.
