Quick Overview

Icecrown became the seat of the Lich King's power after the Frozen Throne was placed in Northrend. When that power weakened, Arthas Menethil raced north to preserve it while Illidan Stormrage tried to destroy it. Their struggle culminated at the Frozen Throne, where Arthas took a new place in the Scourge's history.

Full History

The Lich King's prison was carried to Northrend and embedded in the ice of a remote and hostile land. From there he extended his influence over the dead, gathering the Scourge that would devastate Lordaeron. Icecrown was not merely a distant fortress; it was the center from which a war against the living had spread across the sea.

After the Legion's defeat at Mount Hyjal, the Lich King's power began to fail. Illidan, compelled by Kil'jaeden, sought to finish him. First he tried to use the Eye of Sargeras from ruined Dalaran, but Malfurion and his allies stopped the spell. Illidan then carried the contest into Northrend itself.

Arthas heard the Lich King's summons and made for Icecrown with Anub'arak, passing through the ancient ruins of the nerubian kingdom. Illidan's naga and blood elves raced to the same destination. Arthas overcame Illidan at the foot of the Frozen Throne, climbed the icy peak, and shattered the prison's casing. When he placed the helm upon his head, the struggle that had begun with the plague of Lordaeron entered a new and terrible chapter.
